Chalkboard Label
Our colorful label features many of the personal elements that make L'Ecole Nš 41 unique. In 1984, an art contest was held among the elementary school children in the extended family. The hope was to receive a colorful image that could be used as a wine label. Many of the children drew pictures of the school building, others drew bottles of wine, and one drew the winery cat - Chat O. The $100 prize went to 8-year-old third grade cousin Ryan Campbell. His watercolor rendition of the schoolhouse became the focus of our label.
Megan and Martin's children, Riley and Rebecca Clubb, drew the faint "erased" images shown on the label's chalkboard. While in the 4th grade, Riley composed a song for the piano entitled "It's Happening." Rebecca's poem "Things that are Blue" was written when she was in the 2nd grade. Images of their elementary school work include addition practice and cursive writing. The vintage, varietal and appellation are marked in kid chalk font. In memory of Megan's mother, L'Ecole Nš 41's founding winemaker Jean Ferguson, a guardian angel appears in the lower right hand corner of the label, beginning with our 1998 Seven Hills Vineyard Merlot. This element is now a permanent component of the label.
Perigee and Apogee Labels
We love the fun, whimsical school drawing used on our labels. Recognizing the schoolhouse as the heart and soul of our brand, we began looking for a singular way to set Perigee and Apogee apart from our core line of wines. A wonderful photograph of the schoolhouse, taken shortly after it was built in 1915, hangs in our tasting room. We chose to honor this heritage by featuring it on the label of these two esteemed Walla Walla Valley vineyard focus wines.
