The Complete Guide to Gifting Wine for Businesses

Sending wine as a business gift can be a refined, memorable way to strengthen professional relationships—if done thoughtfully and with attention to etiquette and legalities. Here are key things to know when gifting wine in a business context.

Why Choose Wine for Business Gifts

Wine naturally conveys sophistication and celebration, making it an ideal choice for client thank-yous, to mark the closing of a deal, employee recognition, and holiday gestures. Its broad appeal and breadth of varieties allow you to personalize the gift while expressing genuine appreciation and a sense of hospitality.

The Do’s of Sending Wine

  • Pick quality over quantity: One or two bottles of high-quality wine make a stronger impression than several less distinguished selections.
  • Consider recipient preferences: When possible, match wine choices to known preferences or if unknown, opt for widely appealing varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay.
  • Going big: Some wines, particularly the most cellar-worthy reds and sparkling wines are also made in larger formats – equivalent to 2, 4, 8, or more bottles and may even showcase etched artwork labels.  Such bottles are typically extremely rare and highly prized.
  • Present professionally: Elegant packaging and a personalized note elevate the gesture.
  • Support a personal favorite: By sharing wine from a winery that is a personal favorite of yours, you are both supporting that business and creating an additional connection with the recipient.
  • Confirm company policy: Ensure the recipient’s organization permits alcohol gifts and check any value limits, particularly in highly regulated industries.
  • Ship responsibly: Only licensed retailers and wineries are permitted to ship wine via UPS or FedEx.  The one you choose should be experienced in wine packaging & delivery to ensure legal methods are followed.  Wine is a temperature sensitive product, so care must be taken to ensure the wine’s safe transit in the given weather conditions.  USPS will not transport alcohol, so choose physical addresses (no PO Boxes).

The Don’ts to Avoid

  • Don’t ship wine yourself: Laws around alcohol shipping are complex—always work with a winery or retailer that is licensed to ship wine.
  • Don’t ignore presentation: Generic baskets, and plain brown shipping boxes can seem less thoughtful.  Invest in proper gift packaging.

Shipping and Legal Considerations

  • Shipping wine is highly regulated in the U.S. Most states allow direct-to-consumer winery shipments, but a handful restrict or prohibit alcohol shipments entirely (Mississippi, Utah).  Share your list of destination states early on so the winery can confirm your wine gifts can be shipped to every location on your list.

A well-chosen and responsibly delivered bottle of wine, accompanied by a professional note and thoughtful presentation, can leave a lasting impression and foster stronger business connections.
